Chhattisgarh govt employees on 5-day stir from Monday seeking hike in DA, HRA

Raipur: Work in several government offices across Chhattisgarh was affected on Monday as nearly five lakh staffers began a five-day strike seeking hike in Dearness Allowance and House Rent Allowance.

The strike has evoked good response in all five revenue divisions of the state, namely Raipur, Bilaspur, Durg, Bastar and Surguja, claimed Kamal Verma, regional convener of Chhattisgarh Karmachari Adhikari Federation (CKAF), which has started the stir.

“Five lakh government employees are striking for hike in DA and HRA as per the Seventh Pay Commission recommendations. Teachers’ unions have also extended support,” he said.

Chhattisgarh Vidhan Sabha also on Monday witnessed noisy scenes after opposition raised the issue of agitation by government employees, who went on a pen-down strike from today.

Raising the issue during the zero hour, Brijmohan Agrawal from BJP said that the government employees are on a five-day strike from today due to which all government offices and schools are closed.

He said the government has betrayed the government employees over their demands, including dearness allowance. He pressed for debate on their notice for adjournment motion over the issue.

Leader of the opposition Dharamlal Kaushik said government employees across the state, including in the state secretariat, are on agitation and all offices will remain closed for the next five days. He said it’s for first time that such a situation has developed in this state. Pointing out that government employees have lost patience after waiting for nearly three and a half years to meet their demands, the leader of the opposition said chief minister Bhupesh Baghel should hold a discussion with agitating employees and fulfil the promises made to them.

As the speaker disallowed a debate on the opposition notice for adjournment motion, the opposition continued to press for a debate leading to noisy scenes in the house. Later, the house was adjourned for lunch recess.

Earlier in the day, the BJP had raised the issue and said the Bhupesh Baghel government had failed to keep promises it made to government staffers ahead of the 2018 Assembly polls.
