Customs officer, father arrested in DA case

Panaji: The CBI arrested a Customs officer and his father in a disproportionate assets (DA) case.

The Customs Officer P P Gupta worked as a preventive officer who has earlier worked at the the unaccompanied baggage centre (UBC) at the Goa airport.

He is now attached to the Customs House, Mormugao, and he is natives of Jharkhand.

Gupta had booked an apartment in Thane, Maharashtra while he hails from “ordinary” family and does not have a wealthy background.

During his service, Gupta got many sensitive postings, which include three postings at Dabolim Airport and UBC, where recently large scale smuggling of cigarette imports was detected.

It is informed that Gupta used to visit his brother in Mumbai very frequently by flight from Goa.

His salary account shows huge amounts spent for his online purchases and transfers made to his family members and others, pointing towards a lavish and luxurious lifestyle adopted by him, as well as benami transactions.

It was found that Gupta have acquired all of his assets after joining government service as a public servant and not before that.

During investigation in Jharkhand, the CBI found that Gupta’s father withdrew Rs 1.19 crore from a bank in Daltonganj. The CBI officers later recovered Rs. 1.18 crore and the documents relating to benami transactions.

Both father and son were arrested from Goa and were sent to 14 days CBI custody.
