Dehradun: A customs inspector was arrested on thursday by CBI for accepting a bribe of Rs 4000 from a local trader in Khatima for releasing his vehicle, which was seized on Indo-Nepal border for allegedly smuggling a buffalo.
Accused customs inspector A K Sharma was arrested from his office Customs circle, Khatima, in Udham Singh Nagar, on Thursday.
Prem Prakash, resident of Khatima, had complained that his goods vehicle was seized by SSB personnel on Indo-Nepal border on charges of transporting buffalo without permission. The vehicle was later handed over to customs office in Khatima.
According to complainant, he went to Divisional Office of Deputy Commissioner Customs at Bareilly and got the release order after paying the penalty. However, the local customs officers denied to release his vehicle and instead demanded bribe.
“Prem Prakash filed a complaint with CBI and we formed a trap team which caught the officer red handed while accepting Rs 4,000,” CBI ASP Akhil Kaushik said. A case has been registered under Prevention of Corruption Act.
