WB Natiomal University of Juridical Sciences VC resigns
Kolkata: The Vice-Chancellor of West Bengal National University of Juridical Sciences Prof P Ishwara Bhat today resigned from his post citing health and family reasons.
His resignation follows demonstrations by the students’ association demanding the V-C put in his papers by 9 am today.
The students, under the banner ‘Students Juridical Association’, alleged that under the tenure of Bhat, there has been no coordination between students and the management, no dialogue and an overall decline in academic standards.
In his mail to the Chancellor, Supreme Court Chief Justice Deepak Mishra, Bhat said, “It has been a great honour and privilege to serve this Univerity which I have done with full sincerity, in accordance with law and to the best of my ability.”
He said that due to health and family reasons, he would be unable to serve the University in the capacity of Vice-Chancellor.
The Students Juridical Association, which was spearheading the movement for Bhat’s resignation, claimed the recently released Review Commission report had cited lapses in the administration of the university.
“We had given an ultimatum to the V-C’s office to step down by March 28,” an association member said.
Another general body member said, “Now, since the V-C has resigned, we demand a new search committee be formed to elect a new V-C. The next EC will be meeting on April 7 which we hope will start the process.”
The V-C and other faculty members could not enter the campus today with the students agitating over the removal of the Bhat.
“Some of the student representatives and two faculty members went to the V-C’s residence today and later he put in his papers,” he said.
