Mumbai: Two officials of the Income Tax Department have been arrested for allegedly demanding and accepting a bribe of over Rs three lakh at their office in Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC) here, CBI said today.
The accused, I-T Officer Abhishek Kumar Meena and I-T Inspector Manohar Shetty, were arrested last week, officials of the anti-corruption wing of CBI said.
“Meena had allegedly demanded Rs three lakh for himself and Rs 5,000 for his staff from the complainant for passing a favourable assessment order and not imposing any penalty in scrutiny of I-T returns (ITR) of the complainant,” they said.
After the complainant approached the CBI, the sleuths laid a trap and caught both the accused red-handed.
“Searches were conducted at the office and the residential premises of both the accused, which led to recovery of incriminating documents,” the CBI officials said.
A case has been registered against the duo under the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988 and both of them have been remanded in judicial custody, they said.
