Salman Khan convicted in 2002 hit-and-run case

Mumbai: Mumbai Sessions Court has found Bollywood star Salman Khan guilty of running over five men sleeping on a pavement, killing one.

The actor was charged with culpable homicide in Mumbai for the September 2002 incident. Salman has always denied he was at the wheel, but the judge said all the charges against him had been proved.

Khan is the most bankable actor in India and has starred in more than 80 Hindi-language films, consistently delivering money-spinners in a hit-starved film industry.

Salman Khan is a producer’s golden goose and a verdict against him in the case is likely to spell losses to the tune of 200 crore rupees at the box office as he is committed to film projects till 2017, says a report in IBNLive.

In March, the actor’s driver told a Mumbai court that he had been driving the car while Khan was in the passenger seat.

But the 49-year-old actor has denied being behind the wheel, in spite of several witnesses testifying against him.

The prosecution has alleged Khan was driving drunk and lost control of the car.

Salman Khan’s brother Sohail, brother-in-law Atul Agnihotri and close friend and politician Baba Siddique are also in court to hear the verdict, which is expected to come soon.
