Govt official commits suicide due to job’s stress in Tamil Nadu
Tiruvarur (TN): In yet another such incident in Tamil Nadu, a state government official allegedly committed suicide due to job-related stress and ‘pressure’ from higher officials.
Muthukrishnan (36), a junior draftsman attached to the Rural Development Agency, set himself on fire at Nannilam last night and succumbed to burn injuries today, police said.
Muthukrishnan, in his dying declaration before Judicial Magistrate Kavitha, alleged that he was being continuously harrassed by superior officials and was anguished and heartbroken, unable to bear it.
Police said Muthukrishnan was transferred to Nannilam from here eight months back and his request for retransfer was rejected. Besides an Executive Engineer (EE) Senthilkumar allegedly put too much pressure on him, leading to him taking the extreme step, they added.
Muthukrishnan went to the field last night and set himself ablaze. He was rushed to the government hospital here where he died today.
The district Overseer Association President Vinothkumar also alleged that he had been harassed by the EE. A case has been registered against him.
Police said Muthukrishnan had earlier told his friends that he was facing stress in executing various works.
Muthukrishnan is survived by his wife and two sons.
On February 20, S Muthukumarasamy, Executive Engineer of the Agriculture Department committed suicide by jumping in front of a train. Former Agriculture Minister “Agri” S S Krishnamoorthy was arrested on April 4 on charges on graft and abetting the suicide. He was later relieved of party posts and dropped from the state cabinet.
Muthukumarasamy took the extreme step after pressure was allegedly exerted on him allegedly by him over recruitment of seven drivers.
A ration shop employee in Chennai also committed suicide last month under mysterious circumstances.
