Nasim zaidi takes office as Chief Election Commissioner

New Delhi: Nasim zaidi, who on Sunday took over as the 20th Chief Election Commissioner of India. Speaking to media persons after taking over charge, he said that the Commission will formulate a strategic plan for 10-15 years based on principles of independence, transparency, professionalism, inclusiveness and measurable outputs.

The plan will be based on all round institutional strengthening, voter education and an efficient election operation, he said.

Zaidi further stated that he would like Commission to be more vibrant, transparent and accountable organisation, which is open to receiving new ideas and best practices. Commission will like to formulate its guiding Principles based on good governance.

Zaidi succeeds Hari Shankar Brahma,. A 1975-batch IAS officer of Andhra Pradesh cadre, Brahma (65), who hails from Assam, was elevated as the Chief Election Commissioner in January this year and had a stint of a little over three months. Brahma laid off his office yesterday.

Zaidi is now left with just a single member of the three-member Election Commission till the government fills up the two vacant posts of election commissioners.

He will be the Chief Election Commissioner till July, 2017, when he turns 65. An election commissioner can remain in office for six years or till he attains the age of 65 years.

Zaidi is an IAS officer from Uttar Pradesh cadre of the 1976 batch.

Zaidi possesses a Master`s degree in public administration from Kennedy School of Government, Harvard University and has been a Mason Fellow for Public Policy at Harvard Institute for International Development. He has a post-graduate diploma in business finance from Indian Institute of Finance and holds doctorate in bio-chemistry.

Zaidi has served as the Permanent Representative of India on the Council of ICAO from November 2005 to October 2008. He has served as the Director General of Civil Aviation. He retired from the government as civil aviation secretary on July 31, 2012.Zaidi has served as Election Commissioner since July 2012.
