Central excise Deputy Commissioner gets 3 years’ jail in DA case

Chennai: A special CBI court today has sentenced three years rigorous imprisonment and a fine of Rs 50,000 to a Deputy Commissioner of Central Excise in a disproportionate assets case.

CBI registered a case against Ashokan on the allegations that during the check period September 1989 to January 1998 while he was working as public servant in various capacities, acquired assets to the tune of Rs 21,40,140 in his name and in the name of his wife Bharathi Ashokan which was disproportionate to the extent of 87.74 per cent against his known sources of income and expenditure incurred by him.

On completion of investigation, CBI filed charge sheet against Ashokan and his wife Bharathi under Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988.

The Special Judge for CBI cases in Chennai has convicted Ashokan and was sentenced him to undergo rigorous Imprisonment of three years and imposed a fine of Rs 50,000 in this disproportionate assets case. The court also ordered for confiscation of disproportionate assets to the State.

However, the court has acquitted Ashokan’s wife Bharathi from the case.
