Global coronavirus case total tops 5 crore

BOSTON — The coronavirus has hit another sobering milestone: more than 5 crore positive cases worldwide since the pandemic began.

People crowd the Naples waterfront, southern Italy, Sunday, Nov. 8, 2020. In a stark indication of how fast Italy’s case numbers are surging, less than two weeks earlier, the total of persons either discharged from hospital or no longer positive for COVID-19 was greater than those currently positive. On Sunday, according to Health Ministry figures, there were some 220,00 more persons currently positive for COVID-19 than discharged or recovered in the entire pandemic.
