Sebi Chairman Ajay Tyagi gets 18 month extension till February 2022

Mumbai: Ajay Tyagi got an 18-month extension as chairman of Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI).

Earlier, in February this year, he was given six months extension.

“The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has approved the extension of term of appointment of Shri Ajay Tyagi (HP:1984) as Chairman, Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi) by a further period of 18 months w.e.f 01.09.2020 up to 28.02.2022 or until further orders, whichever is earlier,” an order on the website of Department of Personnel Training said.

With Tyagi receiving an extension for 18 months, he would have the third-longest tenure at the helm of Sebi. Two long serving chiefs of the market regulators are D R Mehta, who was Sebi chairman during 21 February 1995 to 20 February 2002, followed by U K Sinha from 18 February 2011 to 1 March 2017.

The government had earlier this year granted a six-month extension to Tyagi, ahead of the expiry of his three-year tenure on March 1. Tyagi took charge from his predecessor, U K Sinha, on March 1, 2017.

Tyagi, a 1984 batch IAS officer from Himachal Pradesh cadre, was additional secretary (investment) in the Department of Economic Affairs before he was appointed as the Sebi chairman.
