Kashi’s Dom Raja passes away; PM Modi, Yogi Adityanath, Amit Shah, Rajnath Singh express grief

Varanasi: The Dom Raja of Kashi, Jagdish Chaudhary, passed away on Tuesday following a long illness. He was the most senior member of his family.

On April 26 last year, Dom Raja Jagdish Chaudhary accompanied PM Narendra Modi to the Varanasi Collectorate to sign on the PM’s nomination papers for re-election from Varanasi parliamentary constituency.

om Rajas are the keepers of the sacred flames revered by Hindus, which is used at the Varanasi ghat for cremation of bodies. It is believed that the Dom community has been entrusted with the task since the time of Raja Harishchandra.

Dom Raja was one of the proposers for Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the last Lok Sabha elections.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh mourned the demise of Chaudhary.

“I am saddened by the death of Varanasi’s Dom Raja Jagdish Chaudhary ji. He was a keeper of the culture of Varanasi and traditions of Sanatan dharma. He worked for the welfare of the society his entire life. May his soul rest in peace and god may grant his family the strength to deal with this loss,” Priem Minister Modi tweeted in Hindi.

Yogi Adityanath said his demise is “a loss for the entire Indian society”.

“The death of Dom Raja Jagdish Chaudhary is saddening. His death is a loss for the entire Indian society. I pray “Baba Vishvanath” to grant you a place in his “Paramdham”. Om Shanti,” Yogi Adityanath tweeted.

Amit Shah condoled the death of Dom Raja and said he was a true worshipper of Lord Vishwanath.

“The Dome Rajas are the most integral part of the Sanatan culture, who through their service show people the door to salvation. I pray ‘Baba’ Vishwanath to place Dom Raja Jagdish Chaudhary at his feet and give his family the strength to bear this irreparable loss,” Shah tweeted in Hindi.

“His death is an irreparable loss to the Sanatan tradition and Indian society,” he added.

Rajnath Singh expressed his condolences to the family members of Dom Raja of Varanasi, Jagdish Chaudhary.

Taking to Twitter, Singh wrote, “I feel deeply pained by the demise of Dom Raja Jagdish Chaudhary of Varanasi. In the Indian cultural tradition, he and his ancestors are believed to be associated with the time of King Harishchandra. His life carries the message of taking all sections of society together. My condolences to his family.”
