Centre declares holiday on B R Ambedkar’s birthday

New Delhi: The Centre has today declared a holiday on Tuesday on account of Dr B R Ambedkar’s birth birthday.

“It has been decided to declare Tuesday, the 14th April 2020, as a closed holiday on account of the birthday of Dr B R Ambedkar, for all central government offices including industrial establishments throughout India,” said an Office Memorandum issued today by ministry of personnel.

April 14 is not a compulsory holiday for central government employees. “Every year, the Centre takes a call on whether or not to declare an off for its offices across the country,” a personnel ministry official said.

However, amidst lockdown due to the outbreak of coronavirus, all central government offices are functioning with “skeletal staff” and all most officers and staff working from home.

A 21-day nationwide lockdown that Prime Minister Narendra Modi declared in late March to fight the epidemic is officially set to end on April 14.

“The priority of the government is to save each and every life. The situation in the country is akin to a ‘social emergency’, it has necessitated tough decisions and we must continue to remain vigilant,” Modi told political leaders in a video conference.

Hence, central government may extend the nationwide coronavirus lockdown.
