Ex-IES officer Sangeeta Verma joins CCI as member

New Delhi: The Competition Commission of India said Sangeeta Verma, a former Indian Economic Services (IES) officer, has joined as its member on Monday.

Former IES officer Sangeeta Verma today joined the CCI as Member.

The CCI will now have its full strength, with one chairperson Ashok Kumar Gupta and three members.

The other two members are Augustine Peter and UC Nahta.

In April, the Union Cabinet had approved “rightsizing” of antitrust watchdog Competition Commission by reducing the number of its members to three from six.

On December 11, the Ministry of Corporate Affairs said the central government has appointed Verma as the member of CCI “for a period of 5 years from the date of assumption of charge of the post, or until further orders, whichever is earlier”.

“Sangeeta Verma (IES: 1981) has joined the Competition Commission of India today as member. She was administered the oath of office and secrecy by chairperson Ashok Kumar Gupta,” the CCI said in a tweet.

The Commission was established in 2003 to replace the erstwhile Monopolies and Restrictive Trade Practices Commission.

The fair trade regulator draws its power from the Competition Act, 2002, and has been empowered to check anti-competitive behaviour and regulate mergers and acquisitions.
