Two ARTOs in UP held over fake papers

Lucknow: Two ARTOs were arrested from Etawah district in Uttar Pradesh today for their alleged involvement in preparing fake challans and counterfeit documents for vehicles, police said.

Additional Road Transport Officer (ARTO) (Administration) Himanshu Jain and ARTO (Enforcement) Mohammad Azim, posted in Etawah, were arrested from Eidhgah, a police spokesperson said.

The duo were arrested after broker Pradeep Gupta, alias Gudda, who was arrested yesterday, revealed the names during questioning, he added.

Gupta was arrested from the Regional Transport Office with fake documents. During interrogation, he confessed that he used to work for the ARTOs and that he made fake challans for money, the official said.

Police seized over Rs 3 lakh cash, a diary, stamps and documents of the transport department from Gupta, he added.

A police team later seized over Rs 19 lakh cash, jewellery and papers of properties from Gupta’s residence, and acting on his tip-off, confiscated over Rs 6 lakh from Baby, alias Urusa, a transport clerk, the official said.

During interrogation, police also collected proofs, including of conversations of Gutpa with the ARTOs, and arrested the officials, he said, adding that a detailed investigation was underway.
