RBI Governor Urjit Patel today broke his silence on demonetisation.

RBI taking all necessary actions to ‘ease the genuine pain of citizens’ who are honest and who have been hurt, Patel said to media.

Liquidity in the banking system has increased; the intent is to normalise things as soon as possible, Patel said in an exclusive interview to PTI.

Patel has not made any public statement even more two weeks after currency demonetisation and he was last seen on national television on November 8 evening after Prime Minister Narendra Modi made this surprise announcement.

Most of the public statements on demonetisation have been made by Economic Affairs Secretary Shaktikanta Das. He almost daily announces about measures taken by the government to ease the cash crunch.

When Das was asked by media on November 24, why Patel has not made a single public statement and why he alone was making announcements on the issue.

“It is not relevant who speaks. I am speaking on behalf of the government, I am not speaking here in my individual capacity. So, therefore, it is irrelevant whether I am speaking or somebody else is speaking,” Das responded.
