Varanasi stampede: Five cops suspended for gross negligence

Lucknow: Five cops were suspended on Saturday after they were found guilty of gross negligence in crowd management following the death of 24 persons in the stampede in Varanasi.

"We have arrested Ramesh Shivhare this morning. He is wanted by CBI in several cases in Vyapam scam," UP DGP S Javeed Ahmad told PTI over phone.

“Gross failure to anticipate the swelling crowd and make adequate arrangements accordingly has led to the suspension of these five officers,” DGP S Javeed Ahmad said.

The SP City Sudhakar Yadav, SP (Traffic) Kamal Kishore, Circle Officer (CO) Rahul Misra and in charge of Ram Nagar and Mughalsarai police stations were suspended.

“Gross failure to anticipate the swelling crowd and make adequate arrangements accordingly has led to the suspension of these five officers,” DGP S Javeed Ahmad said.

Principal secretary (Home) Debashish Panda and the DGP returned to Lucknow after visiting Varanasi for a first hand assessment of the situation on the ground.

The action against five officials were initiated on the basis of the preliminary report of the principal secretary (Home) and the DGP.

“There were lapses in terms of crowd management and we are forwarding our preliminary report to the government on the issue,” Panda said.

“The process of identification of the 24 deceased is underway and arrangements have been made to send the bodies to their respective homes as some of those killed belong to far flung areas outside Uttar Pradesh,” he added.
