A 15 minute daily exercise lowers death risk for older adults

New Delhi: A 15 minute of exercise each day is enough for older adults to see a huge benefit to their health, experts revealed today.

Just a 15 minute daily exercise can help older adults reduce their risk of early death by 22 per cent.

The short burst of activity is linked to a 22 per cent lower risk of early death.

And doctors say they hope the short amount of time will be a more reasonable target for older adults to achieve on a daily basis.

Dr David Hupin, at the University Hospital of Saint-Etienne, said: ‘Age is not an excuse to do no exercise.

‘It is well established that regular physical activity has a better overall effect on health than any medical treatment.

“But less than half of older adults achieve the recommended minimum of 150 minutes moderate intensity or 75 minutes vigorous intensity exercise each week.

“Fifteen minutes a day could be a reasonable target for older adults. Small increases in physical activity may enable some older adults to incorporate more moderate activity and get closer to the recommended 150 minutes per week.”

Researchers noted that the risk of death fell as the level of exercise increased.

Dr Hupin concluded, ‘We think that older adults should progressively increase physical activity in their daily lives rather than dramatically changing their habits to meet recommendations.

The new research was presented at the EuroPrevent 2016 meeting today.
