Though the transfer of High Court judges is a prerogative of the Chief Justice of India and no political interpretation is generally given to it, the decision has already triggered a row due to its timing.

However, sources said the transfer of Justice Joseph, who hails from Kerala, to a southern state, has been pending for some time and was part of “routine” transfers.

Along with it, Acting Chief Justice of the High Court of Andhra Pradesh, Dilip B Bhosale, has been made the new Chief Justice of Madhya Pradesh, as Madhya Pradesh Chief Justice Ajay Manik Rao Khanwilkar is likely to be elevated to the Supreme Court.
