Woman IPS officer to join NIA

Bengaluru: Karnataka cadre woman IPS officer who has been in the limelight for her role in many a landmark investigation, to Join as SP in National Investigation Agency (NIA).

Sonia Narang, a 2002 batch officer, who has been appointed as SP in the National Investigation Agency, is at present serving as DIG of CID in Karnataka.

“The Union Home Ministry issued order for appointment of Narang as a SP in NIA,” a senior officer said.

Narang hails from Chandigarh and her father is a retired deputy superintendent of police, who is her role model.

Narang graduated from Punjab University in 1999, and is a gold medallist in Sociology.

Her husband Ganesh Kumar is a Bihar cadre IPS officer and they have a son.

When Narang was the SP of Davanagere district in 2006, there was a clash between Congress and BJP workers. She led a police force to implement prohibitory orders imposed under IPC section 144.

BJP MLA, Renukacharya, who was in no mood to adhere to the order, started disturbing the cops, she slapped and dragged him into the police jeep.

She was highly admired by the public for her courage. The MLA also tried to get her transferred from his area, but was unsuccessful.

She was one of the officers instrumental in exposing corruption in the Lokayukta office that led to the resignation of Justice Y Bhaskar Rao as Karnataka Lokayukta, and got his son Y Ashwin arrested.

When we asked about her appointment in NIA as SP, Narang replied, “At this stage, I can only confirm that I have received order from the Union Home Ministry. It is an honour to work with NIA.”
