Tripura Assembly passes bill to effect 15% hike in MLA salary

As per provisions of the bill, basic salary of the Chief Minister has increased from Rs 22,368 to Rs 26,315 per month while salaries of Ministers, the Speaker, the government Chief Whip and the Leader of the Opposition have been hiked from Rs 22,008 to Rs 25,890 per month.

The basic salary of the Deputy Speaker has been hiked from Rs 21,467 to Rs 25,255 per month.

The salaries of MLAs have been hiked to Rs 24,210 per month.

Minister of parliamentary affairs Tapan Chakraborty stated that MLAs will be receiving around Rs 40,000 per month, including all allowances, as they have not been provided with other logistics and regular expenses to cover expenses incurred for local area development, transportation and office maintenance.

Chakraborty also said the price index has gone up substantially and existing salaries, allowances, pension and other benefits of public representatives need to be proportionately enhanced.

“Due to financial constraints, the bill limits the proposal to a modest rise of 15% over the existing rate except for TA/DA,” he said, adding that the government will have to bear an annual expenditure of Rs 34.97 lakh to put this into effect.
