Noted lawyer Ram Jethmalani mentioned in the Supreme Court that CVC K V Chowdary, who should not have been there was enjoying the fruits of his appointment.

The bench of Chief Justice T S Thakur and Justice U U Lalit said, “There was a time when you were fighting to get people out of jail. Now you want people in jail?”

Jethmalani then replied: “I have improved your lordship.”

Accordingly, the bench of Supreme Court agreed to fix March 29 hearing to a plea challenging the appointment of Central Vigilance Commissioner (CVC) Chaudhary and Vigilance Commissioner (VC) T M Bhasin on the ground that the two “do not have clean record”.

Earlier, the court, on August 13 last year, had issued notice to the Central government and others on the plea challenging the appointment of Chowdary, a former Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) chief, as CVC and ex-CMD of Indian Bank Bhasin as vigilance commissioner.

The plea was filed by NGO Common Cause through lawyer Prashant Bhushan.
