New Delhi: 71 central government employees were convicted for graft charges in January 2016, Union Minister of State for Personnel Jitendra Singh said on Wednesday.

In a written reply to Lok Sabha, he said 71 government employees working under central government have been convicted by various special CBI courts in graft cases in the current year of 2016, in just one month.

He also informed 3,078 government employees convicted by various courts in corruption cases between 2013 and 2016.

However, the data, presented by him, shows that 673 employees prosecuted by CBI for alleged corruption were acquitted by courts in 2013 and there was a sharp decline in the conviction rate of accused facing graft charges.

As many as 1,136 employees were convicted in 2013, but the figure started declining in the years that followed with 993 convictions in 2014 and 878 in 2015 but till January 31, 2016 71 employees were convicted for graft charges, the data stated.
