Supreme Court rejects Leader of Opposition status for Congress in Lok Sabha

New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Monday rejected a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) seeking Leader of Opposition (LoP) status for the Congress in the Lok Sabha.

Mallikarjun Kharge is currently the Leader of Congress Parliamentary Party, not Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha.

Mallikarjun Kharge is currently the Leader of Congress Parliamentary Party, not Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha.

While refusing to entertain the plea, the apex court noted that the aggrieved party was not in court and if they want the status of Leader of Opposition then they should approach the court on their own.

The Lok Sabha has no Leader of Opposition as the Congress with 44 seats fell short of the minimum strength of 55 required to stake claim for the post.

In 2014, the Congress had approached the Lok Sabha speaker Sumitra Mahajan over the same. Mahajan, however, rejected their plea after taking the opinion of Attorney General Mukul Rohatgi.
