Delhi Police ACP suicide: Cops clueless about motive

New Delhi: A day after a Delhi Police ACP posted at the Special Cell allegedly shot himself dead and his wife jumped off their fourth floor apartment, investigators are clueless about what might have prompted the couple to take such extreme steps.

Sources in the Special Cell said that a police team was rushed to the apartment of Amit Singh, an officer of Assistant Commissioner rank, in Noida Sector 100 as soon as information about the incident was received.

So far, there is no information about any suicide note recovered from the spot. Special Cell officials informed Singh’s relatives at his hometown Chhapra in Bihar. His post-mortem examination was conducted today, after which his body was handed over to his relatives.

“An inquest has been taken up by Noida Police and we are cooperating with them,” said a senior officer, adding several officials have been questioned and none of them have claimed to have noticed any change in Singh’s behaviour lately.

Meanwhile, Singh’s wife, Sarita Singh, is still reported to be in a critical condition. She might be shifted to specialised facilities in Delhi once her condition improves, said the sources in Special Cell.

Investigators have briefed Delhi Police about the case and so far it has emerged that yesterday night, the couple was alone at home with their 18-month-old daughter when the incident took place.

Singh locked himself in a room and allegedly shot himself dead with his service revolver. Singh’s wife raised an alarm and security guards rushed to his apartment. Minutes after neighbours gathered around, Singh’s wife ran towards the balcony and allegedly jumped off, the sources said.

Investigators also found blood stains in the premises of the apartment, suggesting that Singh’s wife was injured before she took the extreme step. Neighbours told the police that she tried to slit her wrist before jumping off the balcony.

It is also suspected that she tried to kill herself with Singh’s gun first and when it failed, she resorted to the other option.

Singh, a DANIP official, was posted as an assistant commissioner in the Special Cell of Delhi Police.

In October 2014, Singh was the victim of a road rage incident near Lodhi Estate in south Delhi. Before Special Cell, Singh was in-charge of the Preet Vihar police sub-division in east Delhi.
