Delhi police chief Bassi likely to be appointed as next CIC

New Delhi: Delhi Police Commissioner B S Bassi is likely to be appointed as the next next Chief Information Commissioner (CIC), replacing Vijay Sharma, who demits office on December 1, this year.

Bassi, a 1977 batch Indian Police Service (IPS) officer of the Arunachal Pradesh-Goa-Mizoram-Union Territories (AGMUT) cadre, took charge as Delhi Police Commissioner on August 1, 2013.

Bassi who cracked the UPSC exams at age of 21, previously worked Special Police commissioner of Delhi and was also Goa’s Director General of Police.

Bassi is a native of Delhi, he was born on 25 February 1956. Accordingly, Bassi is due to retire in February 2016.

He will be appointed in place of Sharma, a 1974 batch IAS officer and a former Environment Secretary, has been working in the Central Information Commission since 2012. Sharma was appointed as CIC on June 8, this year, so he have a tenure of about six months as he attains the age of 65 years on December 1, this year.

Therefore,the central government advised Bassi to hang up his boots and not wait for his retirement as the delay could ruin his chances of joining as the Chief Information Commissioner (CIC).
