Justice Balakrishnan had joined the NHRC as its chairperson on June 7, 2010 after his retirement as the Chief Justice of India.

According to the buzz, former chief justices S H Kapadia and Altamas Kabir are the front runners.

Another retired CJI Justice P Sathasivam’s name was also in the running but he apparently backed out following the row over his eligibility after he became Governor of Kerala.

“He is no longer eligible to be appointed as NHRC chief. Once a person puts his finger in the pie of politics, he loses the trappings of a judge, and cannot later reclaim the sacrosanct judicial office,” a plea filed by a lawyers’ body in the SC had said.

According to sources, Modi government is looking for the new chairman of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), is giving preference to the Chief Justices of India for the post but the final decision will be taken without controversy.
