Two customs officials suspended for 16 Kg gold theft case, CBI begins probe

Tiruchirappalli: Two Customs officials were today placed under suspension in connection with the disappearance of 15 kg of gold from the safety locker of the customs office here recently.

Officials said the Commissioner of Customs Johnny ordered the suspension of the officials — Mohammed Farook (Superintendent) and Senthilkumar (Inspector)– after initial inquiry.

Both officials were authorised to operate the safe, were present when the DRI team discovered that the gold was missing.

Meanwhile, an official complaint had been made in the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) office in Chennai on Monday

CBI officials are investigating various angles in the case, including the alleged links between customs officials and smuggler groups.

The gold had been kept in the locker for being produced in the Tiruvarur court when they were found stolen on April 19.
