Race hots up for new Petroleum Secretary, Saurabh Chandra to retire in this month

New Delhi: The race for the next Petroleum Secretary is hotting up as Petroleum Secretary Saurabh Chandra is retiring from service on superannuation in this month.

Those in the race for the high-profile position of Petroleum Secretary are from the IAS officers of 1979 and 1980 batches.

The government has zeroed in on three names but since Prime Minister Narendra Modi is away till April 19, a final decision cannot be taken. It is learnt that the officer who will be the choice of the Prime Minister will be appointed.

Chandra is a 1978 batch officer from the Uttar Pradesh cadre and previously was Secretary, Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion before coming to the Oil Ministry in March’ 2014.

An electrical engineer before joining as IAS, Chandra had worked as a joint secretary in the department of disinvestment under the ministry of finance when UPA-I government began its journey with the support of the Left that opposed any disinvestment tooth and nail.

Earlier, he was a district magistrate first in Banda and then in Varanasai.
