Chief Commissioner of Income Tax P K Sharma arrested on graft charge

Jodhpur: CBI today arrested Chief Commissioner Income Tax P K Sharma in Jodhpur in a case of alleged bribery of Rs 15 lakh, received by a local jeweller on his behalf, the fourth arrest of Income Tax officers on graft charges in the last three days.

An Income Tax Officer Shailendra Bhandari, who was detained last evening, and local jeweller Chandra Prakash Katta who allegedly received the amount were also arrested today after questioning about the modus operandi.

The sources said the agency today carried out searches at the residence of Sharma, Bhandari, Katta and also two other senior officers of the Income Tax department, Jodhpur–Joint Commissioner Jai Singh and Assistant Commissioner Rakesh Rana.

They made it clear that Singh and Rana are not named in the FIR.

This is the fourth arrest by CBI of I-T officers since Sunday. The agency sources said they have been keeping a surveillance on the Tax officers because lot of such dealings are suspected during the last few days for filing Income Tax returns, the last date for which was March 31.

CBI had arrested a woman ITO from Mumbai on Sunday while yesterday an ITO was arrested from Lucknow on bribery charges.

“It is alleged that Chief Commissioner of Income Tax, Jodhpur and others demanded bribe of Rs 23 lakh from the complainant(a businessman) for settling the Income Tax assessment for the year 2012-13 in respect of his company,” CBI spokesperson said in New Delhi today.

The sources said after being tipped off about handing over of first instalment of Rs 15 lakh, CBI laid a trap at the premises of the jeweller who was allegedly instructed by Sharma through Bhandari to collect the amount on his behalf.

They said Katta was arrested red handed last evening while receiving the amount. Bhandari was also detained last night during which he admitted that bribe was meant for Sharma.

CBI has registered a case under the provisions of Prevention of Corruption Act against the trio.

All the three accused were produced today before the Special Judge, Jodhpur and remanded to three-day police custody, the spokesperson said.
