Class XI Student arrested over FB comments against UP Minister Azam Khan

Rampur: Police arrested an XI class student and sent him to jail for allegedly posting a comment on Facebook pointing towards Samajwadi Party leader and Uttar Pradesh Urban Development Minister Azam Khan.

The student of a Bareilly school was booked by the Rampur police under section 66A of the Information Technology Act and for breach of peace.

The police arrested the student on Monday and produced him yesterday in court, which sent him to the district jail. His bail plea will be heard only tomorrow, so he will spend another night in jail.

Fashat Ali, Media Advisor to Azam Khan said “”I informed the police that this person has posted controversial and inflammatory post in the name of Mr Khan which is a lie. It has hurt the feelings of both Hindus and Muslims and maligns Mr Khan’s image.”

Further asserting that Social media is being misused.

Rampur SP Sadhna Goswami said, “During questioning, he told us that he did not understand the real meaning of what he was posting.”

Section 66A of the Information Technology Act pertains to offensive messages sent through a computer. Conviction can mean a three-year jail sentence and a fine. It has been challenged as an attack on the Fundamental Right to freedom of speech and expression.
