New Delhi: The BJP on Monday declared India’s first woman IPS officer Kiran Bedi as its chief ministerial candidate in Delhi but it has opened old wound for lawyers of Delhi.

All Delhi Bar Association has warned the BJP that they would campaign against her if she “did not apologise for her action 27 years ago”.

The bar body urged fellow lawyers to ensure she doesn’t become the chief minister (CM) of Delhi. In other words, the body asked lawyers not to vote for her, citing her past “track record”, as the DCP (North), she had ordered lathi-charge against them when they were protesting against handcuffing of one of their colleagues in 1988.

“We had organized ‘lawyers for Modi and Modi for lawyers’ campaigns. We still support the central BJP leadership but won’t tolerate this lady, who has been against lawyers, and the bar associations of Delhi district courts have unanimously passed the resolution to ensure she should not become the CM” R K Wadhwa, chairman of the bar body said.

His views were echoed by Delhi High Court Bar Association president Rajiv Khosla who claimed thousands of lawyers shared his “anguish over BJP’s controversial decision.”

“I support Modi but he should realize that Bedi is not fit to hold a sensitive post, a fact recorded by the Justice Wadhwa commission. In think that’s the reason she was overlooked for the post of Delhi Police commissioner. By thrusting her as the CM candidate, BJP is doing injustice to lawyers,” Khosla said, justifying the resolutions passed by the bar associations.

Khosla accused Bedi of not just ordering lathicharge on lawyers in 1988 but also bringing a mob in the guise of disgruntled litigants who roughed up lawyers and damaged many chambers in Tis Hazari.
