Government is likely to announce on Wednesday Bharat Ratna for former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee.

Sources said that the announcement could be made post the Cabinet meeting that will take place in the morning.
Sources added that Prime Minister Narendra Modi is likely to meet Vajpayee at his residence after which he will head to his constituency Varanasi on Thursday.

Bharat Ratna is India’s highest civilian honour and so far 43 individuals have received the award.’

The Modi government will observe Vajpayee’s birthday as the good governance day.
Bharatiya Janata Party veteran L K Advani has backed Vajpayee’s name for the Bharat Ratna calling him a true patriot.

He said, “A Bharat Ratna for Atal Bihari Vajpayee should not be seen in terms of a reward for doing his duty but as an award that recognises his stature. It would be very appropriate and befitting for a patriot like Vajpayee.”

Outgoing Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah also backed the demand and said the UPA government should have conferred the country’s highest civilian honour on the former Prime Minister.

Omar also said it was a “lost chance” for the UPA, which was in power for 10 years from 2004. “I wish the UPA government had risen above politics and conferred the Bharat Ratna on Vajpayee sahib, would have been a fitting gesture,” Omar said on Twitter.

Former Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Tuesday also demanded Bharat Ratna for Atal Bihari Vajpayee for his contributions to the country. Nitish said Bharat Ratna should be announced on Vajpayee’s birthday on December 25.
